City Guide - Bundi
Introduction: A small town near Kota, Bundi is located at the footsteps of a large hill and was named after Bunda Meena. Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills on three sides, Bundi is surrounded by a massive wall with four gateways. The place is replete with many tourist attractions such as with baoris, palaces & forts, lakes and the awe-inspiring natural surroundings. Bundi is known for attractive step wells and tanks, which are about 50 in number and mark the town's streets and bylanes. Interesting monuments including impressive medieval forts, palaces, 'havelis', temples and 'chhatris' with elegantly carved pillars, along with a picturesque lake in the heart of the town, are equally magnificent.
History: Ruled by the Hada Chauhans, Bundi is located 36km from Kota and is a marvel to visit. The area of Bundi came under the Chauhan rulers in the 12th century. The descendents of the Chauhans set up their center at Bundi and ruled from here. Bundi got its name from Bunda Meena, one of its former rulers. When Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Sultan Mohammed Ghauri in 1193 AD, some Chauhan nobles seeked shelter in Mewar and became allies to the Rana while other young warriors surged towards the Chambal and defeated the Meena and Bhil tribes. Then they developed the Hadoti kingdom. Later, two branches of Hadas formed two different states of Kota and Bundi, on two banks of the river Chambal. Places of interest: The Palace has now been converted in to plush hotel. It has a beautiful pavilion and has a gallery of murals that sparkle the palace. Elaborate colorful paintings on wall depict the scenes from “Raga Mala”- the Radha Krishna story. This palace looks beautiful from distance, when illuminated by light. Built around 1354, the Taragarh Fort is the great palace to visit and stay. The huge reservoirs within the fort were carved out of solid rock. The stunning 84-pillared cenotaph, known as Chaurasi Khambhon ki Chatri, set among the well maintained garden is a treat to watch, especially at night. Travel Information: Bundi is a district situated in the southeastern part of Rajsthan. Tonk binds it in the north, in the west by Bhilwara, and on southwest by Chittorgarh district. Kajali Teej is the hottest attraction of this small town, which celebrated during the onset of monsoon.
