City Guide - Chennai
Introduction: Chennai is the capital of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the fourth largest metropolitan city of India after Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Chennai is a seaside city where the sea is a deep blue, embracing the second largest beach in the world. It has many monuments and temples that display the contributions of the Chola and Pallava Dynasties to the ancient Dravidian civilization. Chennai also has the ancient churches and Cathedrals that exemplify the British heritage. Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram and Thanjavur are good examples of temple towns, and these towns are secular and encourage peace amongst citizens.
History: A few years ago Chennai used to be called Madras. The ruling party in Tamil Nadu changed the name of the city to Chennai in 1997. It was once a small fishing village. This region on the coast was previously under the control of the Pallava rulers of South India who used the port at Mylapore to trade cloth and spices. The Portuguese East India Company built a fort called San Thome in this area in 1522. In 1612, the Dutch East India Company built a settlement in Pulicat in north. After the independence of India, Chennai became the capital of Tamil Nadu and the hub of Dravidian movement.

Places of interest: There are many historical monuments in and around Chennai that are full of tourists every year. Fort St George is one of them. It is the finest example of India’s British military construction. This building is named after St George, the patron saint of England. It consists of St Mary Church and the Fort Museum. Built in 1892, the High Court complex is Chennai’s main landmark. This red Indo-Saracenic structure is believed to be one of the largest judicial buildings in the world. Located at Trplicane High Road, Shri Parthasarthy Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The Pallava Dynasty built it in the 8th century. It is one of the oldest surviving temples in Chennai.
