Introduction: Once a part of Vijayanagar Empire, Hampi is situated 350 kilometers away from Bangalore. This small town evokes medieval village amidst numerous shrines and temples that is still an active place of worship. The crowded historical buildings hint at the centuries old heritage of the village, for it is some 450 years since Hampi's grandeur came to an end as the center of the Vijayanagar Empire. The modern Hampi has many reminiscences of the older Hampi, and they relish the older and peaceful times of this amazing place. You can see here monkeys hopping from one place to another and hear crows on the rooftops.

History: Two local princes, Hakka & Bukka, founded Hampi, the land of surprises in the middle of 14th Century. Hampi was the capital of the great Hindu Empire in Deccan Plateau. The city was plundered and burnt in 1565 AD, after the combined attack of armies of Muslim Sultanates of the Deccan defeated the Vijayanagar Military Commander and the King fled the Capital. In its heyday, it was a fairytale city with many temples, palaces and the most beautiful mansions. The Vijayanagar Kings were great patrons of art & architecture as evident by the vast ruins of Hampi.

Places of interest: Located in the east of Hampi Bazaar, just 2 kms away from main town, Vittala temple is a World Heritage monument. Incredible sculptural work of the temple is a pinnacle of Vijayanagar art. Virupaksha Temple is situated at the western end of Hampi. This temple is one of the earliest structures in the city. The main shrine is dedicated to Virupaksha, another name of Lord Vishnu. The Queen’s Bath is a must-visit here. It lies in the citadel area downward Hazaara Rama Temple. It is huge structure. The place is 15-m square and 1.8 m deep and is circumscribed by decorated arched corridors and awe-inspiring balconies.

Travel Information: Hampi is one of the most fascinating historical sites in southern India. It holds many beautiful surprises. One can still glimpse the splendor of Vijayanagara, one of the largest empires in the history of India, in its ruins. The best time visit Hampi is between September and February. The nearest rail point is Hospet from one travels another 12 kilometers by road reach Hampi. Bellary Airport is the nearest airport.
