Introduction: Just 239 kms away from Jaipur, there is a historical city of Rajsthan named Kota. It is an amazing juxtaposition of the majestic medieval age and modern industrialization. Its untouched wealth of impressive forts, opulent palaces and splendid palaces dating back to several centuries display the rich cultural heritage of this city. Over the years Kota has emerged as the industrial heartland of Rajsthan.The imposing fort of Kota stands overlooking the modern Chambal Valley Project with its many dams- Kota Barrage, Gandhi Sagar, Rana Pratap Sagar and Jawahar Sagar. Kota is famous for its distinct style of painting, saris, stone product and vibrant education sector.  

History: The history of Kota is linked with the history of Bundi. Both Bundi and Kota emerged under the rule of the Chauhans in the 12th century. The descendents of the Chauhans set up their capital at Bundi and ruled from Kota. It was King Jahangir in 1624 who who separated Bundi and made Kota impendent. Then Rao Madho Singh was bethroned as king of Bundi. It was then conquered by the British during the Raj, and thereafter joined in Rajasthan when India was liberated 60 years ago.

Places of interest: Situated on the bank of river Chambal, Chambal Garden is favorite picnic spot for local residents of Kota. The centerpiece is the murky pond infested with crocodiles. Built in 1740 by one of the queens of Kota, Jag Mandir is another major attraction of this city. This red sandstone monument can be best seen early in the morning. The Keshar Bagh famous for its royal cenotaphs located just beside this monument. It lies in the old palace, and has a magnificent collection of miniatures of the era of Rajputs. You can also see here exclusive sculptures, frescoes, et al. The museum has remains of the arms and arts used by the former rulers of Kota.

Travel information: Kota is located in the southern part of the state of Rajsthan.Held between the month of September and October; Dusshera Mela is the hottest attraction of Kota. Said to be one of the primary festival of Hindus, Dusshera is celebrated with full zest and festivity. If you are planning to visit Kota, the month of October can be the best time to relish Dusshera of Kota apart from its historical monuments. Jaipur is the nearest airport from Kota. As Kota lies on the main Delhi-Mumbai railway line via Sawai Madhopur, a number of trains pass through and stop here.
