Kovalam

Introduction: Kovalam is a small beach town located in the district of Thiruvanantpuram. Kovalam is unarguably a place to chill out in India. It not only attracts tourists from India, but overseas as well. The word “Kovalam” can be defined as a collection of coconut trees. Actually, you can see here many trees along the tree. The beaches are a treat to watch, as here you can see white sands and water jutting out of the sea. This marvelous beach is a tourist's dream comes true. And if you are sick and tired of beach, there many other things to do. You can go shopping and you will find some ethnic handicrafts, jewelry and art on display.

History: The European guests of the then Travancore kingdom discovered the potentiality of Kovalam beach as a tourist destination in the 1930s. But the real fame as an ideal beach resort was won later for the Kovalam beach in the early 17th century with arrivals of the masses of 'Hippys'. It was a debut of the transformation of just a casual fishing village of Kerala into one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. Nowadays, you can also see here a number of foreign tourists who are actually chartered tourists.   

Places of interest: Breathtakingly beautiful beaches are the main attraction of Kovalam. They are always abuzz with the hundreds of tourists across the world. The crescent shaped beaches of Kovalam can be divided in to main three parts. The southern most and most popular beach is the Lighthouse beach, from where one can have spectacular view of Vizhinzam mosque. It is the best beach for relaxation. The northern most beach is Samudra, which hasn’t affected by the time. It is replete with some basic wooden fishing vessels. The last and middle one is named Hawah; each morning local fishermen start their work from this very beach.   

Travel information: Kovalam is a small village, situated about 13 kms away from Trivandrum district of Kerala. Apart from beautiful and serene beaches, yoga and health center are becoming popular all over India. Ayurvedic salons and recuperation resorts are major attractions of this beach town. Kovalam is an ideal place for kayaking, swimming, surfing and skiing. Here you can enjoy sunbath and swim both. The nearest international airport from Kovalam is Thiruvanatpuram International Airport, which is 14kms away.
