Introduction: The city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, the nucleus of Brajbhoomi, is located at a distance of 145km from southeast Delhi and 58km from northwest Agra. Mathura is the land of Lord Krishna, where he was born and spent his colorful youth life. This city is still vibrant with Lord Krishna legends and his charismatic personality. Revered as the most endearing Hindu gods, Lord Krishna is remembered for his charm, his mischievous pranks and extraordinary exploits. In Mathura, you can see many scenic ghats, with steps and stairs that lead to the ghats. The River Yamuna in Mathura is considered to be very scenic. Peda (a type of sweet made of milk) of Mathura is very famous across India.

History: Mathura is one of the few cities of India, which has been mentioned in both history and mythology of India. Mathura is full of stories related to Lord Krishna’s life. Mathura became the powerful state under Kushan Empire, whose greatest king was Kanishka. It was the golden age of Mathura, which saw its economic and cultural development. Mauryan Dynasty also ruled this city 3rd – 4t century BC. Buddha is said to have visited this city and established many monasteries here. Mughal emperors like, Mahmud Gajni, Sikander Lodi badly looted this prosperous city during their invasion. 

Places of interest: Shri Krishna Janma Bhoomi is the most sacred spot of Mathura. It is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, who enjoys a high reverence among Hindus. Thousands of pilgrims visit this holy place throughout the year. Dwarkadheesh Temple is the main temple of the town; it is specially decorated during festive seasons like Holi, Janamashtmi and Diwali. Jama Masjid is other important site of Mathura. Built in 1661 AD by Nabir khan, this mosque has 4 loft minarets decorated with bright colored plaster mosaic.  Archaeological Museum is located at Dampier Park. It has one of the finest collections of archaeological interests such as rare items related to Kushan Empire. 

Travel information: Mathura is on the main lines of the Central Railways and is connected with all the important cities of Uttar Pradesh and India such Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Jaipur, Gwalior, Kolkatta, Hyderabad and Chennai. Airport of Mathura is 63kms away from the main town. March month can be the best time to visit this holy city, to catch the revelry of Holi festival, which has its unique specialty in India.
