City Guide - Trichy

Introduction: Famously called Tiruchirappalli, Trichy is the fine blend of tradition and modernity built around the Rock Fort. Rockfort Temple is the most famous land mark of this lively town. Hailed as fourth largest city of Tamil Nadu, Trichy was a citadel of the early Cholas, which later fell to the Pallavas. There are several churches, colleges and missions dating back to the 17650s.  The city is a thriving commercial center in Tamil Nadu and is famous for artificial diamonds, cigars, handloom cloth, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys.

History: History of Trichy dates back to centuries before Christian era when it was a citadel of Chola Dynasty. During the first millennium AD it changed hands between the Pallavas and Pandyas many times before again coming under the control of Chola Dynasty in 10th century AD. After the final of debacle of Chola Dynasty, Trichy finally came under the under the supremacy of Vijayanagara kings of Hampi and remained in their control until their downfall in 1565AD by the hands of mighty Deccan emperors. Trichy was one of the main centers around which the wars of the Carnatic were fought in the 18th century during the British-French struggle for supremacy in India.

Places of interest: The 83m high Rock Fort is the only outcrop in the otherwise flat land of the city. The rock is one of the oldest in the world-approximately 3.800 million years, which makes it as old as the rocks of Greenland and older than the Himalayas. Srirangam is surrounded by the waters of river Cauveri on one side and its tributary Kollidam on the other. Located near Trichy, Srirangam is the main pilgrim center of Tamil Nadu. Natharvalli Dargah is dedicated to Baba Natharvali, who is regarded as one of the most revered Muslim saints in the world. 

Places of interest: Trichy is a thriving commercial city of Tamil Nadu, situated on the bank of river Cauvery. The Rockfort temple is one of the major attractions of Trichy. Airport of Trichy is 5kms away from the main city. It is also well connected to rail network, as it is an important junction on the Southern Railway connecting Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tirupati, Mysore, Rameswaram and Bangalore. Local transport of Trichy is also quite good, city buses ferry to all major tourists destinations of the city.
